Get Real

welcome to the new reality

What does yours look like?

The New Real Magazine is where we crack open corruption, encourage radical expression, seek conscious living, and explore mysticism.

Our mission is to provide a platform for all voices regardless of background, skin color, or preferences. We are passing the mic for people to tell their own stories, share their informed opinion, or bring light to an issue that matters to them. However, if you are a cis, white male, you best have something legitimate to say.

Founded in 2020, The New Real is creating improved standards for journalism, media and storytelling. While it is essential to look at issues from every angle, we are human first.

We do not tolerate abusers of power and privilege. We reject the notion that we cannot inject ourselves into a situation where help is needed.

The world is not all doom and gloom, either. Traditional news has always been centered around negativity, assuming that’s all that sells. This is simply not the case. The New Real celebrates and encourages creative expression and stories of vulnerability and conquest.

WANT TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE NEW REAL?

GUIDELINES:

We are accepting writing, photo, and documentary-style video submissions. We will not accept any works that include disrespectful language of any kind. This includes but is not limited to: racism, white supremacy, hate speech, discrimination, exploitation, homophobia, xenophobia, transphobia, etc.

WRITING

  • When sending over a pitch for a written piece, we have a few things we ask that you consider. We center our stories around five categories: Politics and Conflict, Healing and Mysticism, Business and Technology, Health and Wellness, and Art and Creativity.
  • What category will your story fall under? It’s okay if it’s more than one. Creative writing like poetry or short stories falls under Art and Creativity.
  • We accept four types of stories: Features, Profiles, Personal Essay, and Think/Opinion. Which type of story is your piece?

Features

  • Features dissect an issue/problem and how it’s affecting any living entity involved. These pieces should include input from sources (experts on the topic) and research to support the topic.

Profiles

  • Profiles tell a story about a person, place, or thing. These do not need to be controversial. Other voices or research that is connected to the person, place, or thing are encouraged.

Personal Essays

  • Personal Essays are stories about yourself. Have you had an inspiring experience that you want to share with our audience?

Think/Opinion

  • Think/Opinion pieces reflect on events, happenings, perspectives, and beliefs. They can be persuasive or simply food for thought. Sources and research are encouraged, but not necessary.

*Note: We will accept previously written pieces on a case by case basis. We cannot accept work that has been published elsewhere. If you have written a piece that you feel would be a good fit for The New Real, please still answer the questions above and send us your piece. We reserve the right to make edits and adjustments to your work.*

Photo

  • Please send us a detailed description of a photo story you’d like to tell. Upon approval, we will work closely with you to determine how many and which shots tell your story the best. Also, please upload at least 5 images, or a link to your online portfolio, for a review of your previous work. If you’d like to submit a previously-shot photo story, please upload anywhere from 5-15 photos that tell a story. Your photos should be captioned, edited, and in jpeg format. Along with your pictures, give us the title of your photo story and a short description of what your photo story is telling.
  • We cannot accept photo stories that have been published elsewhere.

Video

  • Please send us a detailed description of a story you’d like to tell through a video medium. Send us (at least) one video you’ve completed in the past for a review of your work. If you’d like to submit a video you’ve already completed, please submit your video in the form below. Your video should be edited and free of any copyright issues – including backing tracks. Please provide a title and a short synopsis of what your video is about.
  • We cannot accept videos that have been published elsewhere.
